Breaking Addictions: Living with Intention
-
Addictions are widespread. Most severely, this can be in the form of drugs and alcohol. Still, it can also come in other forms, including gambling, social media, video games, work, risky behaviours, and even emotions such as worrying or anger.
Throughout our lives, we may experience some form of addiction. Addictions become problematic when we neglect our responsibilities to care for ourselves, and unhealthy habits in our lives can be very damaging to our well-being, relationships, and quality of life. Causes of addictions include chronic stress, trauma, mental illness, or a family history of addiction.
For Ricky-Lee, addictions are prevalent in his family and community, and it is something that has impacted him. From these experiences, he will share personal stories and lessons of overcoming addiction, inspiring changes in his family, his studies in Psychology, and more.
In this session, you will learn more about addictions and habits and what we can do to heal/overcome them. You will also learn how to live with intention and energize your path towards honouring your spirit.
Self-Care: Living a Healthy Life
-
What is self-care? As easy as it sounds, it's taking care of yourself. It can be any activity that promotes care for your body, heart, mind, spirit, or soul. Self-care is respecting your wellness, nourishing your body, practicing mindfulness, and anything that helps you lead a healthy lifestyle.
Having a healthy relationship with yourself boosts confidence, relationships, stress management, and helps you function fully in life's ups and downs.
Self-care is community care. It is integral to living a healthy life. It is far too common that this is often neglected, and it is not only to the detriment of ourselves but can also negatively impact our work and those around us. When we care for ourselves, we can show up more fully.
Ricky-Lee understands deeply what it feels like to be in the extreme deficit of self-care, and in growing, he's walked through grief & loss, and burnout, and has embraced a rich path in learning about healing and wellness.
This session will be an opportunity to reflect upon your perspective on self-care, gain new understandings, and learn about various practices to support a pathway to self-care and living a healthy life.
Black feminist Audrey Lorde vibes “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare.”
Healthy Relationships
-
Feeling connected is imperative; We are social creatures, relationships and connection are vital to our well-being. There are many kinds of relationships, and who we choose to be in relation with is important. Relationships can include familial, friendships, romantic, and relations with our environment, natural world, and Mother Earth.
Healthy relationships are important, leading to greater fulfillment and happiness. Studies show healthy relationships can strengthen our immune system, help recovery from disease, and may even lengthen life. Further benefits include lower rates of anxiety and depression and higher self-esteem and empathy.
How do we grow healthy relationships? This involves mutual respect, accountability, reciprocity, togetherness, nurturing, sharing, and understanding what connects us.
As a psychology student and a curious soul, Ricky-Lee has explored the expansiveness of relationships. He's developed a greater understanding of the arts and science of communication, conflict resolution, and cultivating spaces conducive to growing our relations and community.
Be ready to understand the beauty of relationships and how to sustain healthy relations.
Love
-
Self-love, loving others, and love in relationships. What is love, why do we love someone?
Love is powerful, love is medicine, and love is healing. Love creates that warm and fuzzy feeling inside, and it can also be scary as we feel vulnerable, but together, we can learn to love.
Perhaps we have been affected by the traumas our parents and ancestors faced, or maybe our own. Learning love can be difficult. But know we're not alone in this journey; together, we can learn to love.
Self-love, love in relationships, and love for creation. What is love, why do we love someone, and can this expand beyond people? How do we navigate vulnerability and cultivate/manifest/choose love?
Ricky-Lee's been on a journey of learning love—how to receive love, give love, and love himself. Upon reflecting, he's proud of how far he's come in lifting traumas and cultivating love. From all the hurt and violence he's seen in this world, he understands the difficulties our communities face, and he's learning to embrace love. He is excited to share his teachings from personal experiences and academic study with you.
Love is powerful, love is a choice, and love is what makes us human. Together, we can learn to love. Our world craves it, and we yearn for it. Let us make unconditional acts of love the norm. Let's learn, share, and grow this movement together.
Relationship with Nature
-
Everything is connected. Inextricably, we're connected to nature. The pandemic, climate crisis, and socioeconomic disparities remind us that we're interdependent: the land we share, the worlds we live in, and our home, planet Earth.
From hiking mountains of old-growth rainforests, breathing in the salty air sailing by the beach, feeling the powerful cold of winter in the northern tundra, or simply engaging all the senses immersed in nature, we can feel nature's vital impact on our well-being.
Dramatically and in ordinary ways, nature impacts our well-being through ecological systems, the quality of food, water, and air, and influences our worldviews and relationships.
Together, we'll explore the importance of our environment and what we can do about it. We'll also be able to understand further Indigenous perspectives on climate, interconnectedness, and environmental stewardship.
Ricky-Lee has learned about the value of nature and its relation to human well-being from lived experiences, professional work, and University courses in environmental studies, climate, public health, and psychology. Ask him about his stories of being immersed in nature, seasons, culture, spirituality, and anything nature-related! We hope you enjoy this depthful conversation about the environment, interconnectedness, and our relationship with nature.
Through this workshop, students will gain a greater appreciation, relation, and connection to nature.

Ricky-Lee Watts is named after his late father, Rick Watts, whose ancestry is unknown. Through his mother, Molly Watts, he is Nuučaan̓uł. Ricky-Lee is a storyteller, filmmaker, traveller, and passionate dreamer.
Through this session, students will be welcomed to watch the film "Journey to Ehłateese" - "This story is the return to Ehłateese/Kildonan for the children (now Elders) of the Late Freda Cootes. It has been over 30 years since the siblings visited Ehłateese together, the ancestral home of my late grandmother. The stories these beautiful Elders of my family shared illustrate what it was like to grow up in Ehłateese."
Following the film, students will be able to ask questions and dive deeper into questions in learning about additional storytelling mediums, including social media, podcasts, art, and oral storytelling in person.
Leadership: Community Engagement & Inspiring Social Change
-
What is leadership, and what does effective leadership look like? Leadership empowers the collective, focusing on the community rather than the individual.
Leaders facilitate good relationships with each other, our homelands, and sources of life, and they develop processes to ensure the growth of a healthy community. To facilitate good relationships, it is important to care for and strengthen our internal foundations, identify guiding values, and cultivate a shared connection within the community.
We want good leaders and leadership that empowers us to overcome insurmountable challenges and uplifts the well-being of our people.
Ricky-Lee has extensive experience in working at and learning with multiple areas of leadership; formerly managing a national $3M non-profit program, governing as an Elected Councillor for his nation, and leading various initiatives for the community. Recognized as "young elder" by his colleagues, his vision inspires values of ʔiisaak and hišukʔiš c̓awaak — respect for all creation having a common origin and that everything is one. Ricky-Lee is pleased to share his insights and strategies for growing healthy leadership, engaging the community, and inspiring social change.
Students will explore the concept of leadership in their lives, reflect on who inspires them, identify areas where effective leadership is needed, and grow their leadership skills.
Indigenous Reconciliation
-
Our communities and everything are connected. The pandemic, climate crisis, and socioeconomic disparities remind us that we're interdependent: the land we share, the worlds we live in, and our home, planet Earth.
Looking at Canadian history, there are serious implications of colonialism that have left devastation in its wake, impacting people to the present. Impacts that are deserving of attention and reparation. In reflecting upon the past and looking towards a hopeful future where we can all grow together, we must bridge healthy relationships today that will guide us into the future.
Cultivating healthy relationships requires building trust, mutual respect, accountability, reciprocity, togetherness, and an understanding of what connects us. There's still much work to be done. Ask yourself: What is an example of a fractured relationship, and what does a healthy relationship look like?
Ricky-Lee is Nuučanuł through his mother and mixed European through his father. With extensive experience in mediation and reconciliation across many sectors, Ricky-Lee has a wealth of knowledge to share. His vision inspires hišukʔiš c̓awaak; everything is one.
In this session, you will learn more about relationship-building, Indigenous histories, contributions, resilience, land acknowledgement, and responsibilities regarding the TRC and UNDRIP.
